IConARD

International Conference on Agribusiness and Rural Development (IConARD) is an international event organized by the Department of Agribusiness, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Indonesia. This conference is designated to address various issues and studies related to the topic of agribusiness dan rural development. It consists of two main activities, namely plenary talk and parallel discussion. The plenary talk serves as a scientific forum enabling mutual information exchange and discussion among diverse stakeholder backgrounds and expertise regarding the latest yet globally happening issues in the agricultural sector. The parallel session is designated to facilitate the dissemination of valuable research progresses related to the selected scopes of studies. As the output of the conference, all papers are carefully reviewed by our highly selected scientific committees to ensure their qualification to be recommended for both international and national publications. Considering the previous IConARD events, this conference had gained great success in both years and been considered as a potential international event that also offered a promising output through the publication in a reputable journal and proceeding.

THEME OF IConARD 2023

“Global Environment Challenges in Agriculture”

Global climate change that affects global warming has been scientifically proven based on data trends of increasing temperature on earth. The increase in temperature based on trend data per hundred years from 1906-2005 shows that there was an increase in temperature nearly doubling in 1956-2005. This fact makes climate change a necessity as well as an issue of concern to the global community, including Indonesia. The influence of climate change on the agricultural sector in Indonesia is multidimensional, starting from resources, agricultural infrastructure, agricultural production systems, aspects of food security and self-sufficiency, as well as the welfare of farming households in general.

This influence has made changes to the agricultural sector which is very vulnerable to climate change because it affects cropping patterns, planting time, production, and yield quality. In addition, environmental changes will directly affect the supply chain of agricultural products, requiring integration with an environmental perspective into supply chain management including product design, selection and selection of sources of raw materials, manufacturing processes, delivery of final products to consumers and product management after expiration.

Adaptation at the farm household level in dealing with uncertain climatic conditions is determined by how many assets the household owns. Basically every household has adaptive capacity. However, the intensity of the power of adaptive capacity is largely determined by the number of assets controlled, especially agricultural land. The wider the agricultural land and assets controlled, the easier the adaptation efforts will be. This is because adaptation is closely related to the social and economic system it faces. Farm households must make improvements in the use and management of nutrients, pesticides, energy and water, using fewer of these inputs per unit of land. Farmers should make good progress in adopting practices that are more beneficial to the environment, such as conservation tillage, better fertilizer storage, or soil nutrient testing.

Considering the importance of this issue, the 4th IConARD 2023 come up with the theme of Global Environment Challenges in Agriculture to provide a scientific forum that facilitate a mutual exchange of insights and discussion as well as prospective collaboration from highly diverse background.
